One of the most devastating effects of emotional abuse is the loss of self. Over time, you stop knowing who you are. Your opinions have been dismissed so often that you stopped forming them. Your preferences have been criticized so much that you stopped having them. Your identity has been eroded, piece by piece, until you look in the mirror and see a stranger.
Rebuilding your identity after abuse is not about becoming someone new. It is about returning to the person God created you to be before anyone tried to reshape you into something smaller.
You Are Who God Says You Are
The foundation of identity rebuilding is understanding that your worth is not determined by how anyone treats you. It is determined by who God says you are. And He says you are:
- Fearfully and wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:14) You were created with intention and purpose. You are not a mistake.
- Chosen. (1 Peter 2:9) God chose you. Not because of what you do, but because of who you are in Him.
- Redeemed. (Isaiah 43:1) You have been bought with a price. Your past does not own you.
- A daughter of the King. (Galatians 4:7) You are not a slave to fear or to the opinions of others. You are an heir to the throne.
- More than a conqueror. (Romans 8:37) Not just a survivor. You were made to thrive.
Journaling Prompts for Rediscovery
Journaling can be a powerful tool for reconnecting with yourself. Here are some prompts to get you started:
- What did I enjoy before the abuse took over? Think back to childhood, to early adulthood, to before you lost yourself. What brought you joy?
- What do I actually think about this? Pick a topic (politics, faith, food, anything) and write down your honest opinion without considering what anyone else would say.
- What are my values? What matters to you? Kindness? Honesty? Freedom? Creativity? Write down the top five values that you want to guide your life.
- What do I want my life to look like one year from now? Dream without restrictions. No budget, no other people's opinions, no fear. Just what you want.
- What does God say about me? Write down a list of biblical identity statements and read them aloud every day.
Biblical Identity Declarations
Speaking truth over yourself is a powerful way to rewire your thinking. Try reading these declarations aloud each morning:
- I am a beloved child of God. (John 1:12)
- I am free from condemnation. (Romans 8:1)
- I am not defined by my past. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
- I have a purpose and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)
- I am worthy of love and respect. (Ephesians 3:17-19)
- I am strong in the Lord. (Ephesians 6:10)
- I am being restored day by day. (2 Corinthians 4:16)
"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."
Psalm 139:14
Rebuilding your identity takes time. There will be days when you feel like you are making progress and days when you feel like you are starting over. Both are part of the journey. Be patient with yourself. God is not rushing you. He is the master craftsman, and He is making something beautiful out of the pieces of your story.
You are not crazy. You are not alone.
You are not beyond healing.
