It's been a long hard road. Whether you're still in an abusive relationship or you have made your way out. Somewhere along the way, many of us lose ourselves.
Not all at once, but little by little.
We say "yes" when we want to say "no." We take care of everyone else's needs before our own. We wear busyness like a badge of honor and convince ourselves that exhaustion simply means we're doing life right.
Then one day we look in the mirror and realize we don't even know who we are anymore.
What Coming Back to Yourself Really Means
Coming back to yourself isn't about becoming someone new. It's about remembering who you were before the expectations, responsibilities, disappointments, and heartbreak convinced you that you didn't matter.
For me, coming back to yourself began after I hit rock bottom. I realized I had spent so much time trying to keep everyone else happy that I had forgotten to ask myself one simple question:
"What do I need?"
The truth was, I didn't even know how to answer.
Healing Happens in Small Moments
Healing didn't happen overnight. It happened in small, intentional moments. A quiet walk. A journal entry. Painting without worrying if it was good. Reading a book that challenged me. Sitting in silence. Taking a bath without feeling guilty. Learning to say no. Learning to rest. Learning to dream again.
These weren't just acts of self-care. They were acts of self-respect.
"Taking care of yourself isn't selfish. It's stewardship. You were never meant to live emotionally exhausted or spiritually empty."
The beautiful thing about coming back to yourself is that it doesn't make you love others less. It actually allows you to love them more. When your own cup isn't empty, you have more patience, more grace, more joy, and more presence to offer the people you love.
A Reminder for When You Feel Lost
If you've been feeling overwhelmed, burned out, or like you've somehow disappeared beneath the weight of everyone else's expectations, let this be your reminder:
You are still in there.
The dreams you buried are still there. The creativity you stopped making time for is still there. The peace you've been longing for is still possible.
Maybe today isn't about changing your entire life.
Maybe today is simply about taking one small step back toward yourself.
You Deserve the Kindness You Give Others
Because the relationship you'll spend your entire life in is the one you have with yourself.
Treat it with kindness. Nurture it with intention. And never forget this truth:
You matter.
If this resonated with you at all, you should try Rebecca Foret's challenge, The Self Care Dare!
You are not crazy. You are not alone.
You are not beyond healing.
